Story ::     I beleive this is what my sister died from in 1959. She was 3 years old and had a kidney infection that would not clear up. At that time the Dr. finally tried Sulfa drug treatment. She started blistering and was placed in the hospital where she continued to develope blisters. Dr's came from John Hopkins but to no avail. She lived 2 weeks. At that time they asked my parents if they could do a case study of her and my parents agreed in hopes that another child would not go through what she did. We were told that she was also totally blistered on the inside. I have also had a minor reaction to sulfa drug but for me it was immediate and received a shot to counteract the reaction.

Story ::     I am a 35 year old mom and 6 years after my incident am still an emotional wreck. At 29 I went to my doctor for a pain under my rib. I thought it was from running. She said it was probably a tear and gave me a sample of BEXTRA to take for 5 days. My chart clearly said that I was allergic to sulfa drugs. I trusted my doctor was giving me something that would help me. After two days of taking the drug, I developed a high fever and blistery sores in the genital area. It hurt to use the bathroom and I was bleeding. I immediately went to the internet and looked up the drug only to find out it was sulfa. I stopped taking it and I went to my doctor. She said she didn't know it was a sulfa drug either and claimed I must have herpes. She said that a drug wouldn't have this kind of allergic reaction. Needless to say BEXTRA was removed from the market a few years after that.

I had been faithfully married and with my husband at this point for 10 years and neither one of us ever had an STD. She also said that she had never seen anything like it. She sent me to my GYN who said he had never seen anything like it either. He ran a herpes test, looking at my husband and myself as if one of us is cheating. It was the most humiliating thing I have ever been through. It came back negative of course! When he called me to tell me the results and he apologized and said it must be a reaction to the drug my other doctor gave me. I never got an actual diagnosis from a doctor, but after researching it, I know that it was SJS. I never went back to either doctor again. Now I hardly can take any otc or prescription medication without having a mild recurrence. As long as I stay off all meds, I am fine. I will never just trust what a doctor gives me ever again.

My mom got there about 3 hours later and this eye doctor came in and examined my eyes and said i know exactly what she has. It turned out that one of his personel had had SJS about a month ago before i had it. he anounced to the whole room "she has stevens johnson syndrom" and i wrote down "what the hell is that?" and no one could really explain it to me. i couldnt eat so i was on IV nutrition and i got worse i started getting blisters everywhere. and i could barely sleep with how many people came in to check on me. they were taking blood and giving me morphine and druging me up and they didnt even know what had made me so sick. but we figured it out in the end that it was my trileptal that made me so sick and i went home in about 3 weeks not looking my best and still feeling like crap. if you want to know more email me anytime.
